Kuchipudi is the classical dance form from the South-East Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It derives its name from the village of Kuchelapuram, a small village about 65 kms from Vijaywada. It is known for its graceful movements and its strong narrative / dramatic character. There is a legend concerning the origins of Kuchipudi. It is said that there was once an orphan of Srikakulam who was raised by the village. These kind people had him married at childhood as was the custom of the time. However, for his training he went to Udipi for Vedic studies. During his study he acquired the name Sidhendra Yogi.

Bharatanatyam (also spelled Bharathanatyam, Bharatnatyam or Bharata Natyam is a classical dance form originating from Tamil Nadu of Southern India. It owes its current name to Krishna Iyer and later, Rukmini Devi Arundale.
Bharata refers to the author of the Natya Shastra, and natya is Sanskrit for the art of dance-drama. It was brought to the stage at the beginning of the 20th century by Krishna Iyer. Bharatanatyam is thought to have been created by Bharata Muni, a Hindu sage, who wrote the Natya Shastra, the most important ancient treatise on classical Indian dance. It is also called the fifth Veda in reference to the foundation of Hindu religion and philosophy, from which sprang the related South Indian musical tradition of Carnatic music. However, there are references to Rishi Agastya teaching his disciples a different form of sacred dance than the one taught by Bharata Muni.

Among the folk dances of Kerala which come under the religious groups the ritual dance staged in Bhagavathi temples or Kavus in propitiation of .the deities deserves special attention. In the erstwhile North Malabar area of which the modern Cannanore District forms the major part this type of dance is called Theyyattam or Theyyam Thullal. The old view which ascribed the origin ofTheyyattam to Devil dance has now been discredited. The current view is that the ancient cult of here worship gave rise to Theyyattam.Theyyattam literally means the dance of the God, Theyyam being acorruption of the world Daivam or God. It is also known as Tira orTirayattam. A feature of Theyyattam is the use of resplendent costumes and gorgeous colors by the impersonators. This makes it a spectacular pageant that stands out almost unique among the ritual dances of South India.

The dance is a celebration of marital chastity and female energy, for this is what brought Kamadeva (Cupid of Indian mythology) back to life after he was reduced to ashes by the ire of Lord Siva, the Destroyer, one among the Trinity in Indian mythology. The sinuous movements executed by the dancers during Thiruvathirakali around a nilavilakku (the traditional oil-lit wick lamp made of brass), embody lasya or the amorous charm and grace of the feminine. The dance follows a circular, pirouetting pattern accompanied by clapping and singing. Today Thiruvathirakali has become a popular dance form for all seasons and the rituals linked with it are hardly observed. Also known as Kaikottikkali it is an important entertainment folk art of Malayalee women during Onam season.

KATHAKALI is performed by men who in their youth have undergone an intensive course of physical training and a long period of instruction in abhinaya (acting) and nritta (dancing). The former is the representation of emotions and moods by expressions of the face supplemented by mudras, the descriptive and symbolic movement of the hands and fingers in a particular manner to signify an object or action.
The Kathakali actor uses mudras in place of the spoken word. The physical training which a Kathakali student has to undergo is very strenuous. In the cooler months of the monsoon season he has a daily session of eye exercises and gymnastics from 3 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. which ends up with an oil massage. This is a special feature of the training in which the teacher, holding to a bar, massages the student with his feet and toes, working gingelly oil into every joint and muscle. The process is painful, but it does create the required fitness and flexibility of body that is demanded by the incredibly exacting tradition of the Kathakali stage.

KATHAKALI characters represent the mythological beings of the three worlds—the upper world of the devas (gods), the middle world of humans and the nether world of the asuras (demons). The striking make-up and costume are designed to transform the actors both mentally and physically into the types of characters they are to portray. With the exception of the female characters and the gentle ones like sages and holy men, all characters have their faces painted over in bright colours: basically green for the heroes, gods and kings, red and black for those who are wicked and fierce, and various elaborate designs for the animal types.
